Hey There! Let’s Hark!

Hark the Herald

Hark the Herald Angels Sing remains one of the most well known, and the most theologically filled Christmas carols. This song was written in 1739 by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley, who founded the Methodist denomination. Charles still holds fame for writing over 6,000 hymns along with the lyrics of over 2,000 more. Some you may recognize include: And, Can it Be that I should Gain?; Christ the Lord is Risen Today; Jesus, Lover of My Soul; and O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, among others.

When Charles first wrote this hymn for a Christmas Day service, he arranged the lines of the song differently, had slightly altered lyrics, and wanted the tune to consist of slow, solemn music. A few years later, in 1753, Charles’ friend, George Whitfield, changed a few of the words from Wesley’s original, “Hark, how the welkin (heaven) rings, Glory to the…

Got Joy?

Merry Christmas

I hope and pray this Christmas season finds you experiencing the joy of the Lord Jesus Christ in your life!

No Christmas carol list would be complete without the exuberant celebration song, “Joy to the World.” This lively tune is easily memorized and simple to play on an instrument. But do you know the interesting story behind this well loved hymn?

Isaac Watts (1674-1748), author of around 750 songs, is commonly called “The Father of Hymns” due to his popularity as the first English hymn writer. A few of his most well-known songs still sung today include: Come ye that Love the Lord; When I Survey the Wondrous Cross; At the Cross; and the topic of today’s post, Joy to the World. Isaac Watts was a young man when hymns other than the Psalms were allowed to be sung in the Church of England. This gave way to Watts developing…

Grandma said, Give Thanks!

These thoughts are fresh since we just celebrated our 2016 Thanksgiving.

lobochronicles's avatarlobochronicles

Maggie

Tomorrow we will celebrate Thanksgiving which for me, is the most treasured family memory I can recall as a child. Not Christmas, not my birthday, not summer vacation, but Thanksgiving! Growing up, when Thanksgiving came around my mom always made sure we got to Grandma’s house! Have you noticed in the media when they report on all the people travelling home for the holiday they always refer to the destination as “getting to Grandma’s house”? That’s pretty interesting!

I’m told by my Uncle Snack that they didn’t always have Thanksgiving because they just couldn’t afford it. But Grandma wasn’t happy about that and so she did odd jobs in the neighborhood, mostly cleaning for others or helping a neighboring farmer butcher, and she saved her nickels and dimes and dollars and one year proudly announced, “We’re having Thanksgiving and I’m buying a turkey!” And so the tradition began. All of…

How Could It Be?

fall-2016a

How could it be that a person could look around the beautiful universe at this time of year and say, “There is no God!”? Can they really believe that the painted mountains, the miracle of snowflakes (of which they say no two are alike), the timely migration of geese and other birds and many many more incredible sights are just an accident? We who do believe in a Majestic and All Powerful Creator and Mighty Savior embrace it fully, and we know from studying our Bibles that there are reasons that unbelief exists.

The Bible says that we all have blinded eyes and are sinners who have fallen short of the glory of God and that our mortal enemies are, The World, The Flesh (or old nature) and the Devil. These enemies of men’s souls will go to no end to prevent a person from putting their faith in Jesus their Creator. The World will flash it’s endless trappings of things and power and fame and riches which insulate and prevent the lost person from seeing their Savior. Just like the man Jesus talked about who looked around at his property, his riches, and his barns full of grain and felt mighty proud of himself, but God called him a fool and said that very night his soul would be lost.

The Devil and his host of demons are the ememies of God and of mankind. They will do everything in their power to keep a person from glorifying God by keeping them from putting their faith in Christ. They will tempt, they will undermine, they will blind and pull the lost person into the most horrifying sins to make them believe that God will never ever forgive and accept them. But it’s all a lie!

Probably the most sly and powerful force is our own Flesh within us, many times called our Old Nature or Old Man. This person is with us every waking moment and it hates God! It cannot be reformed, no matter how many new pages are begun or new “leafs” are turned over, our Flesh will always pull us away from God! It loves sin! It loves to hate, it loves bitterness, it loves unforgiveness! It has such a huge ego and the thinnest of skin there is no way to deal with it but to put it to death. Sound radical? It is, but the fact is, the only way to deal with it is to by faith, on a daily basis, put it on the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

fall-2016c

So what is the answer to the unbeliever who has been blinded by these great foes? Is there any hope? Is there a way to freedom? Yes! Yes! The unbeliever must turn to God and away from their sin (Acts 3:19). This is huge and not done lightly. They must admit they have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). They must believe that Jesus died on the Cross for their sins and was raised from the grave and lives today (Romans 5:8). Then they must put their faith in Jesus alone for their salvation turning away from trusting in their good works or riches (Romans 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus put it in a nutshell: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16-17)

A simple sincere prayer of faith like this will usher you into God’s family and make you His child. “Lord Jesus, I need You. I believe you died on the Cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn now from my sins and accept you as my personal Savior. I place my faith in You. Come into my life and make me Your child and help me live my new life for You. In Your Name I pray, Amen.

Want to enjoy God’s creation in a brand new way? Then put your faith in the Creator Jesus and your senses will be infused with a breath of refreshing Spiritual air that will cause you to proclaim, “Glory to God”!

Election Day!

vote

This is my brother Larry’s Daily Truck Driver email for Election Day. Greater is He!

God is able with just one Man to get the victory! That’s right, you and God make a majority. When the battle looks stiff against you, when the dark clouds rise over your soul, simply look up, look unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith! When the Israelites appeared to be on the verge of defeat, time and again God won the battle with a few. Today, trust not in man, but vote, knowing that Greater is He that is in you, so, let Him guide you trusting His Voice!

When Gideon put out his fleece to see if God was in his venture, He gave him a clear answer in time of uncertainty! God whittled down Gideon’s thousands and brought about the victory with a meager three hundred men giving God the maximum glory, supplying encouragement for numerous centuries of Believers when it looked like there was no hope!
–The children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country. I Kings 20:27

–Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys,
therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD. And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day. I Kings 20:28, 29

—Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the
world. I John 4:4

–Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee;
yea, I will uphold thee with The Right Hand of My Righteousness. Isaiah 41:10

–They shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver
thee. Jeremiah 1:19

–Because he has set his love upon Me; therefore will I deliver him, I will set him on High because he has known My Name.. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My Salvation/Deliverance/Blessed Hope. Psalm 91:14-16

Greater is He Who dwells within us, Brethren. And, we will receive the blessings listed above if we simply set our love upon Him. Fulfilling the first and greatest Commandment brings about maximum blessing to the Believer. When we call He will answer. When in trouble, and trouble is coming for those of us who believe and stand upon the Truth, He promises that He will be with us, that is, if we keep on loving God through it all, leaning on Jesus, letting Him rule our life. Regardless of who is President, pray for them for God sets up and brings down leaders as He wills. He delivers!

Yes, He will deliver us for He has promised. He will honor us for He has promised. He will give us long life for He has promised. He will show us complete salvation/deliverance from the wiles of the devil and the wicked plan of the Antichrist in that day! We have a great and glorious Savior! Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world! So, let us rejoice, regardless and expect Him to do exactly what He said He would!!

All My Springs Are in You!

spring-house

Isn’t water wonderful? It starts as a trickle bubbling up from the ground out of deep rivers in the belly of the earth seeking freedom and the light of day and then abracadabra! It appears! Have you heard the gentle laughter of water cascading over pebbles and rocks as if it were proclaiming, “Come drink!” Yes, I’ve rested by many a stream and have been swept in my mind to another time of pioneers in virgin forests. I’ve knelt in the soft earth and sucked in the clear fresh and almost sweet tasting water. As well I should, since water is the wellspring of life!

There is another water of which the Psalmist knew. He wrote of it in Psalm 87 where he referred to worshipping the Lord and said, “Both the singers and the players on instruments say,“All my springs are in you.” (Psalm 87:7) Yes, the true Living and inspiring Water is what they sought for and we should as well!

The earth, neither men who trod upon its soil, can offer this water. King David said, O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1) You will not find this Water in your accomplishments, your wealth, your trinkets or any other earthly thing. Yet you know your soul longs for it!

Jesus spoke of this Water when he met a woman at a well. He asked her for a drink and used the opportunity to offer her the Living Water only he could provide.Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14)

Have you tasted of this Living Water? If not, it is only a prayer of faith away! Turn from the dry and thirsty land of this world and seek the Living Water by faith today! Jesus said, He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38) Kneel by the eternal spring and call on the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus the only true Savior who can cleanse you with His Water and grant unto you eternal life.

Pooch Update

wolfe-bros-old
Pooch, Larry, Bruce & Brian (me)

Hello Family and friends! It’s been since the beginning of August that I updated you on my brother Pooch (Warren) Wolfe. As most of you know, Pooch was diagnosed with Melanoma Cancer back in April of this year. He had tumors all through his body at the time. Hershey Medical Center began treating him with a combination of drugs called Immunotherapy Treatment. Miraculously, by July the tumors had all disappeared! See The Miracles Continue! Unfortunately, the healing treatment had many adverse side effects of which Pooch has been battling all summer! He has gone from mountain top highs where he was back to almost full strength doing chores, mowing, driving, etc. to deep deep valleys where he was knocked flat on his back with fatigue, dizziness, nausea, colitis and other “GI” related problems.

We recently had our yearly Wolfe Picnic at his home and when we arrived he was experiencing so much pain he had to lay down for a while but within a couple of hours he was able to join in on the fellowship and by the evening was taking part in all of the fun and storytelling that always happens when we get together.

Over the last couple of months he has gotten into the cycle of being at home for a couple of weeks but then having to go back to the hospital to have his body re-generated with fluids and changes of medication. He currently is in the hospital and he and Thelma are hoping that this time around the doctors will figure out some combination of treatment that will eliminate his constant digestive problems.

I was in to visit him yesterday and he was very groggy and didn’t communicate very much. I went back today and after a couple of changes to his medication he was back to being the Pooch we all know, as he was making wise cracks and joking with the nurses and doctors. He was also up and walking down the hall without any assistance. So please pray that he will maintain a steady increase in strength, have a good appetite (with no nausea) and get back to full activity once more. God is Good and Jesus Saves!

O God who hears our prayers to You all flesh will come. (Psalm 65:2)

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me. (Psalm 57:1,2)

God Will Make A Way!

sorrow2

Life happens! Tonight I sit here after visiting two people in the hospital. One is a Christian brother recuperating from hip replacement surgery, the other a young mother who needs the Lord Jesus and is recuperating from a car accident. I also can’t help but think of a young Christian mother who just days ago was taken from her family by Cancer into the very presence of the Lord after a long hard battle, leaving a loving husband and small children behind.

What are we to say? What are we to think? Where is God when life hurts? Does He hear? Does He care? Life is hard. Sickness happens, things go wrong, bodies wear out. Decisions made result in consequences that bring pain and regret. The miraculous thing is our Great God and Heavenly Father surrounds each one of us with His love and care no matter the condition of our heart and no matter the circumstance in which we find ourselves!

We live in a fallen world cursed by sin which has consequences that are no respecter of persons. The same problems, diseases, accidents, etc. fall on all mankind and we have the ability to react one of two ways to each circumstance. We look down (or inside ourselves) or else we look UP. Those that look UP have just turned to the way out of, or through their difficulties. Consider these Scriptural admonitions which speak for themselves:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Revelation 7:17

Jesus said, “Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

There are many more Bible verses that call out to us to lay down our burdens and allow our heavenly Father through the loving hands of Jesus to save us and assure us of His 24/7 presence so that He can make a way for us through the storms of life.

God will make a way, where their seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see, he will make a way for me. He will be my guide, hold me closely to His side. In loving strength for each new day, He will make a way, He will make a way! (from “God Will Make A Way” Don Moen)

Hearses & Hitches

hearse6

The story is told of a man who thought you could “take it with you”. So throughout his life he stuffed his money under his mattress and then made his wife promise that when he died she would put his money inside his casket to which she agreed to do. The day finally came and her husband died. At the funeral in her time alone by the casket she stood there whispering to him and then placed something under the fold of the blanket inside the casket. A friend who had observed her couldn’t resist asking what she was saying and what had she placed inside the casket? She explained, “Well, I remembered his final request to place all of his money from under his mattress in his casket, so I deposited the money and wrote out a check for the amount and just explained to him that that was much more convenient for me.”

Ok, it’s a made up story but you must admit it IS funny! Unfortunately the way many people in our world live you would think that they too think they will be able to take it all with them into eternity! But the fact is hearses don’t have trailer hitches. This is not a new trend, in that archeologists through the ages have uncovered graves that contained all kinds of things from riches, foodstuff and even other humans who were sacrificed so the departed one would have resources on the other side of the grave.

Riches can be a good thing depending on how they are used but it isn’t often that a person’s riches are used for the betterment of the kingdom of God on THIS side of eternity. In fact, riches can be a huge stumbling block preventing people from even considering eternity! Jesus said it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to reach heaven. He knew what a problem riches could be. He told the Rich Young Ruler in Matthew chapter 19, after he asked Jesus how he could obtain eternal life, to sell his possessions give to the poor and to come and follow Him. The Rich Young Ruler turned away and was grieved because he loved his riches more than his very soul. Jesus also said in Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world but lose his own soul?”

How about you? Is your life all about riches? Are you one who stands in line for the MEGA lottery week after week hoping to make it BIG? Is your life characterized with wanting more, more and more? This is NOT what the Christian life is about, constantly grubbing for more and looking desiringly on other people’s possessions and never being content with the things God has already provided.

The Christian life is about knowing Jesus in a personal way, having been born again by the Spirit of God and being so thankful for what He has done in your life that you are willing to do anything, be anything, give anything or even everything away so that HIS KINGDOM is enriched and as many souls as possible can be saved through your stewardship and your love of the Savior.

Nope, hearses don’t have trailer hitches but the secret is you can send your riches on ahead and they will be measured by the saints you helped reach the Kingdom of God. Now that’s a blank check or reward worth waiting for!

No Bible No Breakfast!

Brian Bible

Many many years ago I was travelling with a good friend in the faith as we were presenting the ministry of Blue Mountain Christian School to various churches in our area. Often it was during the routine of their normal services when they would give us a few minutes to share about this new ministry. As it were, it was a Sunday night service at the First Baptist Church of Lebanon PA when after presenting our information that we sat under the preaching of their pastor.

His message was entitled “No Bible, No Breakfast” and he preached a Spirit filled message that convicted and convinced me to make the second vow of my life. The first vow was the one I made to be faithful in marriage to my first love and now wife of 46 plus years, and the second was made that Sunday night back in the late 70’s which was, “I would not take any daily nourishment into my body before I first fed my soul with the Word of God”. Simply put “No Bible, No Breakfast!”

God takes vows very seriously as we read in Numbers 30:2 “If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.” Also in Psalm 56:12 “Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God. I will render praises to You..” As a result of that vow God has reminded me EVERY morning without fail these many decades to first take in the Word of God before a morsel of food touches my lips! For me, the best time to be in the Word of God is in the morning before I start my day as I believe these Scriptures illustrate.

Psalm 5:3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.

Psalm 59:16 But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; For You have been my defense And refuge in the day of my trouble.

Psalm 88:13 But to You I have cried out, O Lord, And in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Psalm 143:8 Cause me to hear Your loving-kindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

As was Jesus custom as well: Mark 1:35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

As we approach the Lord in the morning with an open Bible on our lap praying, “O Lord open Thou mine eyes to behold wonderful things from Your Word” He answers and speaks to us from the miraculous pages of the Scriptures. He fills us with Himself for a day in which we need His strength to serve Him, to do His will, to endure the temptations facing us, to face the trials of life and ultimately to glorify His Son Jesus. The light of the world shines from our lives and all will see and glorify our Father in Heaven! No Bible, No Breakfast!
